Description
Fritz White Carbon Zeolite is a high grade, snow white form of clinoptilolite clay. The coloration of the zeolite is crucial: zeolites containing higher levels of impurities are progressively darker gray in appearance.
White Carbon Zeolite is the ideal product for removing the ammonia released by the dechlorination of chloramines used in most cities' drinking water. If used with Fritz Guard when adding new water complete and rapid removal of chloramines is assured.
White Carbon Zeolite works much faster in removing ammonia than nitrifying bacteria. It will help keep ammonia levels in check while the biological filter is being established. It also provides excellent surface area for the establishment of nitrifying bacteria.
By removing ammonia it controls cloudy water associated with bacterial blooms (new tank syndrome). White Carbon Zeolite undergoes a visible color change from white to yellow when removing ammonia and dissolved organic compounds (DOC). It can be recharged by soaking in a saltwater bath over 24 hours. Rinse off with fresh water before re-using.
Zeolites cannot be used for ammonia removal in salt water aquaria as they exchange ammonia ions for sodium ions.
In all aquaria (fresh, brackish, and salt waters), White Carbon Zeolite will remove the DOC that discolor the water to a yellowish tint. It has 70% of the active filter area of our black Super Activated Carbon and will also remove other chemicals, dyes (e.g., methylene blue, malachite green, etc.) and other medications. It will not remove small molecular sized elements such as chlorine and trace elements. It will not affect pH.
Fritz White Carbon Zeolite can also soften water by removing calcium ions. Two sodium (Na+) ions from the zeolite are exchanged for each calcium (Ca2+) ion in the water. Zeolite has a greater preference for ammonia than calcium. Any ammonia being generated in the aquarium will be removed first. Since ammonia is always being produced in any aquarium containing living organisms, a larger quantity of zeolite will need to be used to effectively soften any aquarium water.
Usage: To prevent ammonia buildup, use one pound of Fritz White Carbon Zeolite for every 500 gallons of water. Place zeolite into mesh filter bag and rinse filter bag under running water prior to adding to pond. Put the Fritz White Carbon Zeolite into an area of high volume water flow. For best results, place inside filter. Replace every two months, unless you use medication, add water containing high chlorine or chloramines content, or if water begins to smell or discolor. Whenever adding new water with high chlorine or chloramines, use new Fritz White Carbon Zeolite. In heavily stocked aquariums and ponds, more frequent replacement of zeolite may be necessary. When medicating, remove Zeolite, when indicated by medication instructions.
